Variation to Inventory listing after evaluation: CAS number 631-89-0 – 2 September 2026

The defined scope of assessment as a term of the listing will be updated for retinol, 15-[(9Z,12Z)-9,12-octadecadienoate] (CAS No. 631-89-0) on the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (Inventory). This chemical is also known by the associated name of retinyl linoleate.

Reason for varying the Inventory listing

AICIS completed an evaluation under Part 4 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019 (IC Act). AICIS published its final evaluation statement on 26 June 2026, following public consultation. Following this, the term of listing for retinyl linoleate is no longer aligned with this latest risk assessment.

For the reasons set out in the conclusions section of the evaluation statement (page 9 paragraph 7), the Executive Director of AICIS concluded that a variation to the Inventory terms of listing for the chemical is necessary to manage the risks from the introduction of the chemical.

The evaluation included recommendations for risk management through scheduling controls. Introducers should ensure that any introductions comply with the requirements of the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP). Introducers should also be aware that the relevant scheduling entries may change in the future following consideration of AICIS recommendations.

Therefore, the Executive Director is varying the terms of listing for the chemical on the Inventory under section 86 of the IC Act, by removing the defined scope of assessment (DSA) as a term of listing. The proposed date of variation is 30 September 2026.
