Tips on searching for assessments and evaluations

We recommend searching using the chemical's CAS number, if one has been assigned to the chemical.

If you searched using a CAS number but didn’t get any results, check the following:

There are no spaces before, between or after the numbers or hyphens.

The CAS number that you have is current – sometimes a chemical’s CAS number can change. You should check by searching chemical databases such as CAS Common Chemistry, ChemIDPlus and SciFinder-n.

If the chemical does not have an assigned CAS number, or you don’t know what it is, try searching the chemical’s CAS name. 

You can also search using a product name, trade name or cosmetic INCI name, but these may not be in our database or could bring up the report for a different chemical.

Search using letters followed by digits with no spaces or characters.

Do not insert an underscore (_) or slash (/) or hyphen (-).

Examples

Correct: STD1444, EVA00011, CA0012 

Incorrect: STD/1444, EVA_00011, CA-0012

If you're unsure of the full chemical name or want to broaden your search, you can use a wildcard search by inserting an asterisk (*) in your search term. The asterisk acts as a placeholder for any number of characters, allowing you to search for partial matches.

How it works:

Use the wildcard character (*) to replace one or more characters in your search term.

This is especially useful if you only know part of the chemical name or if there are multiple variations of a chemical name.

Examples

  • Searching for chloro*ethane will return results like Benzene, 1,1'-(chlorophenylmethylene)bis[4-methoxy- chloro-1-ethane and more.
  • Searching for *benzene will return results like 1,3-Benzenediol, 5-methyl, monohydrate and more. 

What it means when you get a zero result

There are 3 possibilities:

  1. The CAS number and/or chemical name is protected as confidential business information – see Assessments for Inventory-listed chemicals with specific information requirements.
  2. You have searched for product names, trades names, INCI names or other identifiers that are not in our database – in this case, you need to try searching using the chemical’s CAS number, CAS name or the report identification number.
  3. The substance is not an industrial chemical and therefore is not regulated by AICIS.   

Assessments for Inventory-listed chemicals with specific information requirements

If you get a zero result after searching the chemical’s CAS number or CAS name, but you still need to view the assessment report to comply with your specific information requirement (SIR), then you must submit an SIR form on AICIS Business Services.
